Apartments in Tenerife – Oasis Mango Apartments Review

Oasis Mango Apartments ***

Suntrap Holidays Rating:    8.5/10

Many people come to Tenerife on a self-catering basis and want apartments with more space for their families and offering great value for money, so we’ve added a section to Suntrap Holidays on apartments in Tenerife, to take a close look at a few of the choices on offer here.

In this first article, we take a no-holds-barred look at the quirkily-named, very popular Oasis Mango complex of 89 apartments in the southern resort of Los Cristianos.

There are 10 reviews on TripAdvisor at the time of writing, and 80% of them rate this complex very good or excellent, which is not something you will see often for apartments in Tenerife or anywhere else for that matter.  It’s the same story at HolidayWatchdog with 27 reviewers giving the place 8.5/10.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is it?

The complex is located up a fairly steep hill which you can either climb from the resort centre to work off some of those calories or get a taxi for about four euros.  The advantage is that it is slightly away from the noise of the resort centre, so it’s quieter at night than some of the more central apartment complexes.  Having said that, it’s still within walking distance of the lovely sandy beach and resort centre, maybe 20 minutes away on foot, so for a quiet, idyllic holiday in the sun, the location is hard to beat.

As for Los Cristianos, it’s a great little tourist resort – plenty going on, but not too busy either.  It’s also well placed for a nice short 20-minute taxi ride from Tenerife South airport, so if you don’t want to trek around the island for an hour to get to your resort, it’s a great option!

Who is it best suited to?

Great for families, couples and singles, the Oasis Mango is a quiet complex that’s not for all-night clubbers who would be better off in Playa de las Americas.

A word of advice if you have walking disabilities – be aware that there is no lift and some of the apartments are on higher floors, and this combined with the hill may lead you to look elsewhere.

What about food and drink?

Many apartments in Tenerife are so remotely located that you will be cooking all your own meals every day or facing a drive into the nearest town.  Not here!  Most people who stay here eat out in Los Cristianos or in one of the many restaurants on the road into town as there is such a great choice.  In fact, all of the main cuisines of the world can be found here and prices are reasonable too.  However, there are half-board or B&B options as well as self-catering at the Oasis Mango, so let’s take a look at the food:

Breakfast is pretty good, with crispy “English” bacon, sausages, egg, tomatoes, beans and toast, with cereals too if you want something more healthy.  Evening meals are reasonably-priced and offer a small choice of starters, main course and dessert – nice enough if you are just chilling and fancy a “quiet night in” at the complex.

My personal choice would be to go b&b here – given the closeness of so many reasonably-priced restaurants I would rather eat out at least some of the time in the evenings.

Oh yes, there is also a pool bar where you can get snacks and drinks throughout the day.  The – erm – “happy hour” at the pool bar seems to stretch through the entire afternoon.  Hic!

How do the rooms compare to the usual standard for apartments in Tenerife?

There has been recent investment in the rooms here and you will notice that the kitchens and bathrooms are very new,

having been recently refurbished.  The apartments are very spacious compared to the average Tenerife apartment and are kept spotlessly clean by the tireless staff.

All apartments have a bathroom, balcony/terrace, living room and well-equipped kitchen with a
hob, fridge, microwave, toaster and kettle, so self-catering is a practical option here.  You can use the TV and room safe for a small extra charge.  There is no air conditioning, but fans can be hired at reception, as can hair dryers.

What entertainment is laid on here?

Unusually for apartments in Tenerife, there is entertainment laid on at the Oasis Mango complex.  It has to be said that it’s not the West End – but it’s fun and friendly by all accounts so just sit back, take it with a pinch of salt and enjoy it!

What’s outside?

In the pretty gardens you will find a swimming pool – not exactly Olympic-sized but adequate for the complex and

remember that many Tenerife apartments don’t have a pool at all.  They take a pride in their work here and the pool is hosed and cleaned every morning.  Oh, there is a separate toddlers’ and babies’ pool too.

You will be pleased to know that not only are there plenty of sun beds around the pool, but they are comfortable too, not those hard plastic ones, so you will not be suffering from “sun bed bum” on the plane home!  This is another thing that gives the Oasis Mango the edge over other apartments in Tenerife.

Are the staff friendly?

The staff here are noted for being helpful and courteous, and several reviews mention how the reception staff have gone beyond the call of duty to satisfy requests from guests.  One guest was accommodated with no fuss even though they turned up a day early having made a mistake when booking the room.

Is there Internet access?

No.  Well you did ask!

What other facilities are on offer?

There is a small supermarket on-site you if you are self-catering you can get the basics here which is very useful as it saves carrying the heavy stuff up the hill from the Spar.

There is also a TV room (come on kids, get into that pool, you are on holiday!)

Insider Tips

“At the beach, there is a great little sandwich shop serving wicked chicken salad sandwiches with chips for 2.95.”

“If you don’t mind a few stairs, and want a better sea view, ask for a room higher up.”

“Watch out for the ongoing stand-off between the resident canaries and the cat!”

“The mini market on site is handy, but I recommend you take the five minute downhill stroll to the Spar as it’s considerably cheaper.”

“Go to the Oyster Catcher just down the hill – they do an amazing flambé chicken!”

Verdict

All in all the Oasis Mango apartments compare very well to other Tenerife apartments, the best things being the quiet yet handy location; the general standard of cleanliness and fittings and the size of the apartments.  The lack of air conditioning could be a problem for some people in high summer, which caused me to knock off some marks, but it’s still a great little place to stay and I rate it 8.5/10.
