Was I mad, looking for cheap holidays to Tenerife in the northern resort of Puerto de la Cruz?

This is the question I asked myself when looking for a Tenerife holiday last week. After all, over the last couple of decades, the southern Tenerife resorts of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos have developed rapidly into the main Tenerife destinations for visitors from the UK. Naturally, this means these resorts are the places to look when it comes to finding the real bargain holidays to Tenerife, because there is so much competition, and these days that competition is chasing a smaller number of customers, pushing prices in these resorts even lower.

Cheap Holidays to Tenerife - Puerto de la Cruz Greenery

Although for this holiday I was definitely on a very tight budget, I thought I’d better spend a couple of minutes’ surfing online to do my “due diligence” just to check that the prices in Puerto de la Cruz really were over budget. After all, I’ve never found any really cheap holidays to Tenerife in the North whenever I’ve looked in previous years – it’s always been the south where the real bargains were to be found. So, anyway, over to the hotel search box I went and keyed in the details…

The thing is, when I started to scan some of the results, I found a few hotels that were, well, not quite within my reach but near enough to give me some hope. Could it be possible? Would I actually be able to find some cheap holidays to Tenerife actually within my budget but of a quality that would give me a great holiday?

I was filled with hope, because Tenerife north is a magical place. OK so it’s not always as sunny as the south, but it’s still warm here all year round, and it is very often sunny, just not quite so often as the south. But what you get in the north is a whole different experience from Tenerife holidays in the south. It’s greener, with flowers, gardens, scenery – whereas the south is more arid, drier-looking I suppose. The other wonderful thing about the north is the town of Puerto de la Cruz itself.

If you have never been, a holiday to Puerto de la Cruz will inspire you. There is a lot to do here

Cheap Holidays to Tenerife - La Orotava

and a whole wealth of places to explore – Lago Martianez; Playa Jardin; the beautiful historic town centre itself; the pretty hillside town of La Orotava nearby… I really must write an article on all this. However, I was on a tight budget this time – so could my search for a cheap Tenerife holiday really take me to this special town, where previously I had paid, well, rather a lot, to get to?

Of course, you will have guessed the answer to this question – after all, this article made it to the Suntrap Holidays website and I DO like happy endings! So yes, some twenty minutes later, amazingly I had found not one but no less than three really good four-star hotels that I could afford in Puerto de la Cruz – not only that, but what really surprised me was that one of them was actually cheaper than a similar hotel in the more traditional British resort of Los Cristianos. Things have changed.

I was delighted as you can imagine, and without delay I chose my favourite of the hotels on offer – a classy four-star place called Hotel Atalaya, set in a very quiet area up at the back of the resort overlooking the gardens of the famous Taoro park – and booked before I lost it – for less than £300 per person per week, including the flight. That’s half-board no less, in a very good four-star hotel too. Fantastic! Can’t wait to go now…

So listen, if like me you were thinking that cheap holidays to Tenerife, for UK visitors, always take you to Los Cristianos or Playa de las Americas, why not have another look and you may just be surprised, as I was, at what you can get for your money “up north” these days.

You can use this cheap holidays to Tenerife link to search for today’s deals; it will give you some idea what’s out there. Be lucky!

In the current climate, we all like a bargain, and if you’re looking for a bargain holiday to Tenerife, I will show you how to get one.

Cheap Holidays to Tenerife - Los Cristianos

Which resorts are best for cheap holidays to Tenerife?

For Brits, the most economical holiday to Tenerife is likely to be in the resort of Playa de las Americas or neighbouring Los Cristianos. These two resorts account for more UK holidays than any others, so there is a lot of competition that helps to keep prices down. With most package deals coming to these two resorts as well, they’re the best ones to concentrate on for cheap holidays to Tenerife.

Top Tips

At the moment, with numbers of holidaymakers lower than in recent years, prices are even keener as hotels and holiday companies, desperate to fill empty rooms and empty seats on planes, come up with more and more great deals. But how do you actually go about finding that cheap Tenerife holiday? Let’s take a look at the Suntrap Holidays top tips:

If you’re going for 7, 10 or 14 days, include package deals in your search, as the best package deals to Tenerife or anywhere else are for these lengths of holiday.

Forget about going during short school holidays if you want a bargain. There is so much demand during half-term weeks that the tour operators have no need to lower prices at these times.

To get the cheapest package holidays to Tenerife, book late – within eight weeks of your departure date. With package deals, the later you leave it, the less choice you get, but the better the price. It’s not always the same story if you book separately though – if there is a last-minute squeeze on flight availability, low cost airlines can actually raise the prices later on.

Night flights are better value – always – because people don’t like them, so the cheapest flights to Tenerife will be at least in part during the night. Personally, I would rather stay at home than miss out on a night’s sleep, but that’s just me!

Plan your major excursions before you go. You can sometimes get special deals on tickets to some of the bigger attractions if you buy on-line in advance.

If you are booking your flights and hotel separately, when you add up the costs make sure you include baggage charges and transfers to the resort to get a true comparison.

Eating out in Tenerife is not particularly expensive, but it soon adds up. If you can, go half-board or all-inclusive, and only eat food and take drinks that are included in the price. This is one of the best ways of reducing the overall cost of your bargain holiday in Tenerife.

Finally, these days many of the main on-line agents have price match guarantees, so just like the supermarkets, they monitor prices carefully to make sure they are not being undercut. At the moment, you can book some of the best deals in the market here: Cheap holidays to Tenerife.
