Magaluf, Magalluf so good they named it twice. Well not really, just spelled it two different ways.

Hotels in Magaluf - Marina Pax Hotel Pools

Of all the hotels in Magaluf for young and lively holidays, the Marina Pax Hotel is one of the best if you want to be near the action but just far enough away from the bars so it’s quieter at night. It’s a nice place to stay, a lot more than just a cheap place to get your head down.

Now, if you’re reading this and you’re after a family holiday and you’ve never been to Magaluf, I’d say only come here if you want some nightlife, otherwise there are plenty of quieter resorts. But, if you want some buzz, or maybe you’ve grown to love Magaluf and still want to see a bit of life even though nowadays you just happen to have young kids, this hotel is a good compromise. That’s because you can still see the bright lights of Magaluf, and the kids will be more than happy with the excellent entertainment and kids’ club here.

OK, come with me as we take a closer look at the Marina Pax Hotel in Magaluf:

FAQ

Where is it?

The Marina Pax hotel is at one end of the resort of Magalluf, set on a hill surrounded by pine trees, but it’s still within a

Hotels in Magaluf - Marina Pax Hotel

couple of minutes’ walk of the beach and about 10 minutes’ walk to the centre of the action. Being up a bit of a hill, if you have a room with a sea view it really is a stunner of a sea view.

Who is this hotel for?

You get a really good mix of people here. There are large groups of singles like stag parties and hen parties, but you also get couples of all ages and families with children too. Because the families know that Magaluf is a lively resort, they accept that there will sometimes be a bit of liveliness from some of the guests too! Having said that, it’s not over the top, just people on holiday having a laugh.

How do the rooms compare to other hotels in Magaluf?

The rooms here are basic but very clean and the hard-working housekeeping team seem to be on a non-stop mission to keep them that way!

In each room you will find double/twin beds, safe (optional extra), air conditioning (included in the price), private bathroom, phone and TV. You also get tea & coffee making facilities.

What’s outside?

Hotels in Magaluf - Marina Pax Hotel Pool

There are two pools of a good size – very nice as it happens, really clean, and better than you’ll find in many hotels in Magalluf. There is a pool bar to go with each pool, and kids have one separate pool and also a dedicated section of one of the adult pools.

What about food and drink?

Food’s good here by all accounts, with snacks available all day and a great selection of food in the evenings. What’s included in the price depends on whether you go full- or half-board. If you’re planning to be around the pool a lot in the day-time, I’d go for full board. Breakfast is served 8am till 10am (so if you get in at 6am you can forget that!), lunch is from 1pm till 3pm and the evening buffet is 6:30pm till 9pm.

There’s a good standard of food here, with a carvery in the evenings and plenty of choice – salads, meats, chips of course, vegetarian dishes, fruit.

Oh yes, in the daytime the kids can eat icecream, slurp slush-puppies and lick lollies to their hearts’ content.

Hotels in Magalluf - Marina Pax Hotel View

Are the staff friendly?

We don’t review any hotels in Magaluf or anywhere else for that matter where the staff don’t get a good mention, and this one has loads of good words written about the staff, which is nice. If you decide to stay here, do me a favour and say “hi” from Michael at Suntrap Holidays to Francois on reception, Franchisca in the restaurant and not forgetting perky Antonia on the housekeeping team. Thank you.

Is there Internet access?

Yes, you can check your emails and write on your FaceAche Wall, whatever – it costs ten minutes for one euro.

What other facilities are there?

Magaluf Hotels - Marina Pax Hotel Bar

You can get some peace and leave the kids in the very capable hands of the kids’ club which is better than you get at most hotels in Magaluf. It will keep the little darlings busy all day long if that’s what you want!

Kids (and adults for that matter) can also use the football pitch, play tennis, table tennis or even minigolf.

There’s also a range of activities just for the adults such as archery and rifle shooting (!)

Entertainment here is, well, probably for the kids rather than the adults. I don’t know, maybe they expect that the singles will all be on the town and not bothered, so it’s really geared towards the kids I would say.

Verdict

Out of all the hotels in Magaluf, the Marina Pax hotel is probably just about the best you will find that’s close enough to walk to the strip but far enough away to avoid most of the noise. Clean, good kids’ club and activities, good-sized pools, good food. I’m giving this one 8/10.

If you’re 18-30 or act like it you will have an ace time at this place, better than loads of other hotels in Magaluf.

If you wanna know more, read on – or book it now using the red link at the top.

FAQ

Where is it?

The Sotavento Apartments are very close to the main strip of bars and clubs, really handy for all the action and close to the beach too. It’s up a steep but short hill – tricky in high heels apparently but I’m a bloke so I took mine off!

Someone says on TripAdvisor that the hill makes it perfect here compared to other hotels in Magaluf cos it puts off randomers from walking up and wandering around at all hours. The hill position means you get a great view too, so you can take some snaps and text them back to your Mum!

Oh yeah, the beach is only, say, two minutes walk, but down 100 steps, no 101 I think, so good for the bum cheeks on the way up girls. And boys!!!

Forget the hill though because it’s not an issue and it’s worth it to stay in this wicked hotel as

Hotels in Magaluf - Sotavento Apartments Jacuzzi

you’re gonna see..

Who is this hotel for?

This place is spot on for groups of lads, groups of girls, stag dos and hen parties. Only come as a couple if you want it “lively”, it’s not the romantic getaway kind of place.

Old folks don’t stay here unless they’re well into the 18-30 scene (it does happen.. so remember lads, if you’re approached by one, get her to take her teeth out FIRST OK). Oh and there’s no kids, though you might see some “big kids” dressed in school uniforms.. Whatever does it for ya I guess..

How do the rooms compare to other hotels in Magaluf?

You get a living room with two sofabeds and a bedroom with two single beds. It’s plenty big enough for four people, so works out one of the best value hotels in Magaluf, leaving plenty of dosh for partying!

Hotels in Magaluf - Sotavento Apartments

The apartments have air con (free) so if you come here in the summer you can stay cool while people in loads of other hotels in Magaluf are ROASTING all night! They’re nice rooms too, recently decorated and they keep them clean and tidy. Yeah, so you should respect that boys and girls…

If you want to cook up a storm, well, get a life mate… No seriously, there’s a kitchen in the apartment with a cooker, pans, toaster, kettle, all that, so you can make a snack. Get food and stuff from the supermarket on-site, it’s not a rip-off.

What’s outside?

There’s a swimming pool, and get this, it’s got a kiddies’ section – but there are no children here. Weird. Music on all day, and they have pool parties every week so you can have a laugh or get down and dirty in your cozzie. (I can’t TELL you what I’m thinkin about right now….woahh!!!) Oh, and there’s no annoying pool rules either, within reason!

There’s a pool table too. Yeah, so you can play pool by the pool lol.

And if all that wasn’t enough, you’ll find a jacuzzi here too! It’s brilliant and not something you get at many hotels in Magalluf in this price range. Just remember the “hot hub etiquette” lads and lasses. (Hands strictly by invitation only, and no noxious gases!!!!)

Hotels in Magalluf - Sotavento Apartments Bar, Room, Gym

What about food and drink?

The bar is cool, decorated really trendy and you can start the night here before goin off down the hill to the strip. Prices very reasonable too.

In the day for when you’re by the pool there’s a snack bar with good prices and choice.

Are the staff friendly?

Listen, respect the staff and they’ll respect you, right? Treat them as you want to be treated, and you’ll find them polite and helpful. Start throwing stuff around the balcony and smashing glasses and that, well, they’re gonna get stroppy cos the cleaners have a hard job as it is, you know?

Is there Internet access?

Yes, there are four computers in the hotel where you pay a euro for 12 minutes I think it is, so you can check your emails or whatever.

What other facilities are there?

As you can see from the photo, there’s a gym so you can work off some of those alcohol calories. You can pay extra for satellite TV and also to use the safe in the apartment. If you’re coming by car there’s a car park. Well, to be honest there’s still a car park even if you don’t come by car! Funny, huh!

“BCM was awesome. 20 euros to get in, well worth the money, 4 free drinks and loads of free stuff!”

“Do NOT dive into the pool at night. May seem like a drunkenly good idea but it will leave your wallet wet and 50 euros lighter.”

“Remember that they charge an 80 euro deposit per room (not per person) when you check in. You get it back when you leave unless you break stuff.”

Verdict

Out of all the hotels in Magaluf, the Sotavento is one of the best for a lively Magaluf holiday. It’s very near the main strip, there’s a lot of action going on in and around the pool, the apartments are clean and it’s great value for money.

Aparthotel Ferrera Blanca ****

Winner of the TripAdvisor Best Family Hotel award in 2009, the Aparthotel Ferrera Blanca is one of the most popular Cala D Or hotels you will find.

Of 138 reviews at TripAdvisor, 81% rated it excellent or very good and a measly 7% rated it below average. No less than 86% of guests would recommend this aparthotel to others.

You can stay in this completely renovated four-star holiday complex on any basis from bed & breakfast to all-inclusive, but as the evening meals here offer such good value, I recommend at least half-board.

Read on and you will find out why we selected this aparthotel for review here at Suntrap Holidays:

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is it?

Of all the Cala D Or hotels, this one must surely be in one of the most wonderful positions – no more than 100 metres

Cala Ferrera Beach

from the sandy beach of Cala Ferrera, one of the northernmost of the little bays that make up the pretty resort of Cala D’Or on the east coast of Majorca. The complex consists of several low-rise blocks arranged amongst the gardens and with the sea and wooded landscape for a backdrop.

If you want to walk into the centre of Cala D Or itself with its many shops, restaurants and marina, it will take about 15 minutes, but there are shops and bars more locally on the main street of Cala Ferrera and many people probably never get around to going into “town”.

The aparthotel, like all Cala D Or hotels, is about 40 miles from the airport but because the roads at the eastern end of the journey are not so good it can take about 90 minutes by coach, but I would say that this is time well spent because Cala D Or and the surrounding area is so very beautiful.

You can find more information on Cala D Or here: Holidays to Majorca

What are the rooms like?

The 183 rooms and apartments here are of three types:

There are 60 double/twin rooms, 80 suites, which have a separate bedroom, and 43 apartments, which have a separate bedroom and also a kitchenette equipped with a kettle and microwave. The suites and apartments can sleep up to four, having two single beds in the bedroom and sofa-beds in the living room.

Because all of the rooms have been refurbished since 2008, the décor and fittings are modern and to a high standard compared to other Cala D Or hotels. Each room has air conditioning; a private bathroom with shower; a hair dryer; flat-screen satellite TV, fridge and a balcony overlooking the sea or gardens. The room safe can be used for a small charge.

Note that the wet-room-style bathrooms with their hydro-massage showers and contemporary washbasins are impressive but don’t have a bath, so if you must have a bath, you need a different Cala D Or hotel.

What about food and drink?

All guests receive a complimentary breakfast at the Ferrera Blanca Apartments, served from 8am until 10am, so there is no need to cart breakfast cereals, bread and milk to your room. The full English here is a good one too, with (deep

breath) sausages; bacon; boiled, scrambled and fried eggs; mushrooms; beans and tomatoes. Phew! Oh, and look out for the smoked salmon that makes an appearance for an occasional treat!

Just when you have recovered from breakfast, lunch, for those on full-board or all-inclusive stays, is served from 1pm till 2:30pm either in the snack bar on the terrace and in the main buffet restaurant, a spacious, airy room with amazing views out over the beach.

All-inclusive guests will be able to nibble on cakes and icecreams, and quaff drinks all day long of course, but for those on half board the next meal is dinner is served from 7pm until 9:30pm.

There is a good choice of food on offer and comments such as “hot and freshly-cooked” are used by guests to describe it. Food in the main restaurant in the evening includes pasta dishes, roasts, paella, fish dishes, vegetarian dishes and salads.

There is also a full-on Italian restaurant on-site here – something you won’t find at many Cala D Or hotels. It’s just down from the main buffet restaurant, serving pizzas and dishes such as freshly-made cannelloni and lasagne, with waiter service in the evenings. This is very popular, but if you are booking for either edge of the main season get in touch with the hotel or Suntrap Holidays to check if it’s going to be open.

As you will know if you have been on holiday to the euro-zone recently, eating out is not as cheap as it was and this applies in Cala D Or as much as anywhere, which probably the main reason that so many people are turning to half-board or all-inclusive options these days. When you get the level of quality, choice and service like you get at the Ferrera Blanca, all-inclusive is an especially attractive option. Oh, and just because guests can help themselves to lager on tap here does not mean you have to actually lie underneath the tap for the entire evening, OK!

What’s outside?

There are no fewer than three swimming pools for adults and two for kids – and there is plenty of room, so even if a

pool activity is going on in one area there is enough room to do some serious swimming in one of the other pools. There is no shortage of sun beds here either – something often commented on by guests. If you want a change of scenery from the pretty gardens there is a solarium terrace above the main restaurant building with yet more sun beds.

In the sizeable grounds you will also find tennis courts and a children’s playground.

What entertainment is on offer?

There’s a very full entertainment programme here, for all ages, daytime and evening. The animation team of ten people led by Andy really seem dedicated to what they are doing. The kids have a mini-club and mini-disco every night. The daytime activities include football, volleyball, tennis, archery, aerobics, yoga and pilates. In the evenings there is a warm-up session of bingo or other games, then a show by the in-house team or one of the professional acts that do the circuit of Cala D Or hotels. Watch out for the Temptations tribute band, said to be especially good.

Is there internet access?

Yes, the complex has four areas where you can connect to WIFI free of charge – the bar, hall, main restaurant and pool

Cala D Or Hotels - Fererra Blanca Dining

bar.

What else is on offer here?

What else.. Oh yes, there is a TV room and a games room, and also a little store within the complex for odds and ends rather than the weekly shop!

What are the staff like?

The staff here are a great asset to the place – polite, helpful and friendly. It has been said that if you smile and say hello to anyone here you will get an even bigger smile back and a cheery “hola”. Andy and the entertainment team are very popular, but watch out for the naughty Sergio! Sebastian and Tomi also deserve a special mention.

Who is this hotel best for?

Like most hotels in Cala d Or, the Ferrera Blanca is not a place for clubbers and party animals. Most people who come here are families, couples and singles looking for relaxation in quiet, laid-back surroundings.

“If you want karaoke, the best bar is the Carrabel a couple of minutes away.”

“The entertainment finishes at about 11:30pm so if you have young children, I’d suggest you ask for a room away from the stage.”

“You don’t need to pack beach towels as you can hire them from reception.”

“I wouldn’t recommend paying extra for a sea-view because you only get to see a small part of the bay.”

Verdict

The Aparthotel Ferrera Blanca is a winner with most of the people who stay here and I have no hesitation in recommending it to you – here at Suntrap Holidays we give it 9/10.

This three-star aparthotel with its collection of 315 apartments arranged in lovely gardens around two curvaceous outdoor pools is a real hit with many customers.

On Tripadvisor at the time of writing, 85% rate it excellent or very good based on 56 reviews, and a stupendous 92% or these reviewers would recommend the hotel to others.

You can stay self-catering here and take advantage of a well-equipped kitchenette in every apartment, or go half-board/all-inclusive and enjoy a great choice of food and drink.

As you may know, here at Suntrap Holidays we don’t review just any old hotel – so what’s so special about this one? What makes it so popular compared to the other Cala Bona hotels on offer? Please read on to find out…

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is it?

The Floriana Resort is set back about 500 metres from the beach in Cala Bona, the pretty little family-friendly resort on the east coast of Majorca, just north of the slightly larger resort of Cala Millor. In fact, if you fancy a stroll there is a popular promenade linking the two resorts and you can walk to Cala Millor in about 10 minutes; and in 20 minutes you can stroll to Sa Coma.

The buildings are gardens of the Floriana complex are in a quiet area, further back than most hotels in Cala Bona, yet the resort centre – with its shops, cafes, restaurants bars and lovely sandy beaches – is within five minutes’ walk.

Cala Bona Hotels - Floriana Pool 2

Like other Cala Bona hotels, the Floriana is about 90 minutes from the airport by taxi, slightly longer if you are on a coach that has several dropping-off points.

What are the rooms like?

The apartments here, spacious, immaculate and light, are one of two types – the one-bed apartments sleep a maximum of three adults and one child, whereas the two-bedroom apartments sleep at most five adults and one child.

Each apartment has a private bathroom including bathrobes and toiletries – and a hair dryer. You will also find heating/air conditioning; satellite TV; safe and phone, and a balcony.

Because the hotel offers self-catering packages as well as half-board, each apartment is geared up to preparing meals, with lounge-diner, and a kitchenette equipped with a refrigerator; microwave; two-ring hob; kettle and toaster.

What about food and drink?

Even people who come here on a self catering basis are reported to pay to eat here in the evenings, which says something about the quality and value of the food here compared to some of the other Cala Bona hotels. In fact, self-catering guests can even go all-inclusive for the day – it’s a good idea given the standard of food and drink on offer here.

Cala Bona - Floriana Hotel Restaurant

Breakfast and evening meals are served buffet-style in the main hotel restaurant, and the food gets excellent reviews.

For breakfast you will find sausage, bacon, eggs and all the other ingredients of a very full English. Or you can pig out on cereals, toast, cheeses and cold meats if you want to eat, erm, more healthily! In the evenings you will find a great choice of meat, fish and seafood dishes on offer – all said to be prepared to a very high standard.

Once a week you can don your finest and attend the “Gala Dinner” where they really do pull out all the stops to show you what the chefs can do here.

The contrarily-named La Luna snack bar, open all day from 10am till 6pm, offers drinks and light meals that you can take at the bar or on comfy chairs. There is also an outside area where you can enjoy that midday snack in your swimwear between dips in the pool.

What’s outside?

There are two large pools here, set amongst the trees and gardens and very pleasant indeed. You’ll find plenty of sun beds and umbrellas except perhaps in high season, so please do try to resist joining the towels-at-dawn crowd.

Children are particularly well catered-for here, with two dedicated pools to choose from.

Unusually amongst Cala Bona hotels, and probably because there is plenty of space in the resort’s grounds, there is a sports centre. Here you can have a go at archery and rifle target practice (BEFORE you find your way to the bar, OK!), and there’s also a volleyball pitch. However, the real show-piece is, get this, no less than 10 clay tennis courts. Six of them are at the back of the complex away from the sea, and these courts are amazing because they really are set amongst the Majorcan countryside, yet still on-site. It’s a great space and a unique setting for tennis. Each year the Floriana attracts many people because of this great facility.

If you fancy exploring the surrounding area, you can hire a bike through reception – it’s flat along this part of the coast and particularly well-suited to a little cycling – makes a change from the pool and the beach.

The Floriana can also arrange any of these activities if you really are determined never to use that sun bed: horse riding; golfing and diving.

What’s on offer for the kids?

The Floriana really must be one of the best Cala Bona hotels, if not one of the best hotels in Majorca when it comes to family entertainment. Apart from the two dedicated pools, the kids have no fewer than two mini-clubs for ages 4-12; a

Cala Bona Hotel Floriana Kids Playground

children’s playground and a kids’ disco at 8:30pm. The first hour of the evening cabaret show is designed with kids in mind too. They really do go out of their way to look after the kids here with something on throughout the day and into the early evening.

What else is there?

A heated indoor pool is available until the end of May, but please check whether it is open in the early part of the winter if you are going then and this is important to you. There is also a sauna (for a small charge); steam room and gym. And when you’ve worn yourself out with that lot, there’s a TV room and a games room.

Is there internet access

There’s an “internet corner” at the Floriana available on a pay-as-you-go basis, but no WIFI in the rooms.

What are the staff like?

The animation team deserves a real pat on the back at the Floriana resort – they work very hard and the kids’ entertainment is to a very high standard according to many people who have stayed here.

Watch out for the comical bar staff here – one of their favourite pastimes is allocating a nickname to each guest!

Who is this hotel best for?

Really, this hotel is going to suit anyone looking for a relaxing Majorca holiday in the sun, but it’s especially good for families. The 24/7 party crowd will be better off in a Magaluf hotel, though, as this is not a resort with a 6am finish!

“The Rope and Anchor on the sea front by the harbour was where I went if I fancied a steak or a good old pie.”

“It’s worth knowing, at the Floriana you can even go all-inclusive just for the day if you come on a self-catering holiday.”

“I highly recommend the chicken kebabs at the pool bar!”

“You must visit the stunning Caves of Drach and the beach at Cala Millor is just fantastic.”

“If you’re doing the self-catering thing, the best supermarket is Hiper in Cala Millor (set back from the central square) which has a nice deli and fresh meat counter.”

Verdict

If you are looking for a family-friendly aparthotel in a quiet area yet within minutes of the beach, with large, clean pools and a relaxing feel, the Floriana Resort Hotel could be the one for you! I score this lovely place 9/10.

Of all the hotels in Magaluf, the Sol Guadalupe is one of the best-loved according to the rave reviews it gets from the people who stay here.

Hotels in Magaluf - Sol Guadalupe Hotel

For example, on Tripadvisor, out of 202 reviewers, 84% rated it very good or excellent, and an incredible 91% would be happy to recommend the hotel to others.

One of the most frequent comments about the Sol Guadalupe hotel is that it should be four-star and not three. From the moment you walk into the stunning reception area to be greeted by the smiling receptionists, everything certainly has that four-star feel, and it’s a feel that will stay with you throughout your stay in this well-run hotel.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s so special, and what’s not..

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is it?

The Sol Guadalupe is centrally located in Magaluf, but the short five-minute walk from the night-life means that it is quieter than a lot of hotels in Magaluf. It’s also a quick 200 metre hop to the beach.

Like all Magaluf hotels, the Sol Guadalupe is about 26 kilometres from the airport which makes for a nice short transfer.

Who will this hotel appeal to?

Magaluf (sometimes spelt Magalluf) is a lively resort in high season – very lively in fact. In peak periods this hotel is best suited to people who either love the buzz of Magaluf or are at least tolerant of it. Younger couples and groups of

Sol Guadalupe Hotel Magaluf Restaurant

friends who come to enjoy the night-life but also want a clean, comfortable, plush hotel to relax in during the daytime will love it here.

Outside those heady high-season weeks the Sol Guadalupe becomes more of a place for families and has many facilities for guests of all ages as I will explain.

What’s the food like?

Sol certainly know how to get food right in their hotels and the Guadalupe is no exception. You can start the day with a luxurious breakfast in the bright and modern dining room – full English; toast; cereals; ham; cheeses; eggs cooked to order; yoghurt; fresh fruit – everything you could wish for. Just be aware, if you are late to bed, that breakfast finishes at 10:30am!
If you need an energy boost during the day there is a snack bar, which is a very unfair description for the modern, relaxed Salon Bar.

In the evenings, it’s back to the main buffet restaurant for a huge array of freshly-prepared dishes – usually a choice of two soups; meat and fish dishes including some local Spanish dishes; salad dishes; cold meats; cheese; burgers; chicken nuggets; chips – the list goes on and on. Oh, and unusually there is an “Italian corner” where you can get a pizza; spaghetti or garlic bread – every night if you want it!

How do the rooms compare to other hotels in Magaluf?

The 493 rooms here are often described by customers using words like “clean”, “spotless” and “airy”. They are not the

Hotels in Magalluf - Sol Guadalupe Hotel Room

biggest hotel rooms in the world and can feel a bit cramped if you have three people in them, but what they lack in spaciousness they make up for in quality – they’re recently refurbished and to a very good standard, in line with the whole hotel.

Each room has a balcony; bath and shower; air-conditioning; satellite TV; phone and a safe for a small charge.

If you have a baby, ask at reception for a key to the baby room, where you will find microwaves; sterilising equipment; kettles and a fridge so you can easily prepare formula feeds for your baby.

What’s outside?

Of all the hotels in Magaluf, the Guadalupe Hotel must have one of the most impressive outdoor areas. There is a large lagoon of a swimming pool with a central jacuzzi, and two recently-built children’s pools.

The gardens and terraces are extensive, and well-equipped with sun beds. At night, there is atmospheric mood lighting throughout the pools and gardens that changes colour according to what entertainment is taking place. Some people would say that although the beach in Magaluf is great, the hotel pool here is even better!

Do they have Internet access?

You will find public internet terminals here, available on a pay-as-you-go basis, but as far as I am aware there is still no WIFI access in the rooms.

Are the staff friendly?

Read as many reviews of this hotel as I have and you will see that the staff here get a lot of praise, from from the smiling reception staff to the efficient housekeeping team and the apparently non-stop waiting staff. The entertainment team work exceptionally hard here by all accounts and daytime activity organiser Florian gets a special mention. Also watch out for the lovely Toni.

What activities are on offer?

Compared to many other Magaluf hotels, the Sol Guadalupe has a very full entertainment programme for all ages, day and night. What about joining the paella and sangria workshop? Or maybe take your chances on the “water carpet” (don’t ask!). Feeling sporty? No problem – archery, petanque, water basketball, aerobics – it’s all on offer here. There’s also a TV room, a pool table and table tennis.

At night there are good quality acts, shows and live music several times a week – and of a standard that you certainly don’t get in all hotels according to the glowing reports from guests.

Verdict

The Sol Guadalupe has to be one of the best of all Magaluf hotels, definitely at the top of its class in my opinion and offering great value and quality. I have no choice but to rate this a rare 9.5/10.

Suntrap Holidays Rating:	8.5/10

Club Martha’s is a pretty, four-star aparthotel complex in a lovely resort, and is without doubt one of the most popular of all Cala d Or hotels for families.

The complex, offering self-catering, B&B, half-board or full-board stays, consists of three buildings called Es Bolero, Marthas Apartments and Ses Cases D’Or Apartments, and you will be allocated a room in one of these buildings when you book for the complex. If you come by taxi, ask for Club Marthas as the whole complex is known locally by that name.

Club Marthas was refurbished in 2008, so it’s important when looking at reviews to remember that any before this date are pre-refurb and essentially worthless now.

Cala D Or Hotels Club Marthas Pool

On Trip Advisor, 69% rated it excellent or very good, and 18% rated it less than average, but if we look at the past 12 months, after the refit, of 25 reviewers, 76% rated it excellent or very good and just 12% rated it less than average. So, the newer reviews are great and in fact of these last 25 reviews, 80% would recommend Marthas to a friend, which is excellent.

Club Martha’s is, more than anything, a great place for families and in no way suited to the boozing all-night-party crowd, as you will see from this article:

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is it?

The Cala d Or hotels are either north or south of the inlet that forms the marina in the centre of this resort; Club Marthas Complex is one of those lying to the south of the marina in an area known as Cala Egos. It is a short 300 metres to the nearest of Cala D Or’s little coves, and you can walk to the centre of Cala Egos, where there are a few bars and restaurants, in a couple of minutes. The resort centre of Cala D Or with its good selection of shops, bars and restaurants is a quiet 25-minute walk away, around the marina, but many people seem to be more than happy with what Cala Egos has to offer in the evenings.

Although the journey from the airport is only about 40 miles or so, it can take about 90 minutes because the roads get progressively smaller as you get further from the airport. In my opinion the resort is well worth the transfer time.

What about food and drink?

The Natalie snack-bar and restaurant is open right through from 9am until 10pm, and offers snacks to eat in or take away. There is a large lounge here too, with satellite TV.

Unusually for Cala D Or hotels, Marthas has its own pizzeria on site – a genuine Italian job with dough flying overhead and all that – massive pizzas for about five euros. You can munch your way through it in the restaurant or on the outdoor terrace, or you can take it away to eat in your apartment.

The weirdly-named Moogie Terrace is a large outdoor bar and entertainment area with loads of chairs and tables, and it’s here that you can sip your fave cocktails while you watch the hotel entertainment under the stars. Aaaahh…

For those on half- or full-board the main buffet restaurant offers a selection of hot and cold dishes, salads and pastries, and attracts some good comments from customers, but to be quite honest it looks as if a lot of people who come here go self-catering and use the pizzeria and snack bar, maybe eating out at night in Cala Egos or paying for the hotel evening buffet as they want it. You can even get your full English breakfast just down the road in Cala Egos if you fancy it.

How do the rooms compare to other Cala D Or hotels?

Being refurbished in 2008, the rooms have a fresh feel and are light and airy, helped by the fact that the buildings are arranged so that the rooms are south-facing.

There are apartments, with a separate double bedroom and sofa beds in the living area, and also smaller studios which don’t have the separate bedroom. All rooms have a kitchenette equipped with electric hob, fridge and microwave; a private bathroom; a private balcony; phone; TV with satellite channels (for a small charge); and air conditioning which is free here. You can also pay to use the optional safe in the room, and you can hire a kettle and toaster from reception, which some reviewers thought should be included in the price and I agree – about the kettle at least.

What entertainment is laid on here?

Of all Cala D Or hotels, Marthas complex has to be one of the best when it comes to entertainment for all the family – the team here is dedicated and buzzing with energy – they really work hard and it shows. The day and evening entertainment programme here is truly impressive, even more so when you think that the guests here are not all

Cala D Or Hotels Club Marthas Outside

English; the entertainment team has to speak in several languages so that everyone get some attention.

Kids up to age 12 can take part in activities offered by the “Molly Club” – archery lessons; water games; aerobics; a mini disco; cabaret and fancy dress; tee shirt painting (!) and that’s just the kids. For the teens and adults there is five-a-side; basketball; water polo; table tennis.

In the evening there are the shows – including real favourites like “A Night at the Movies”. There is also a professional DJ to mash up those toons. Rock and roll.

What’s outside?

There are three sizeable pool here, set in pretty gardens and terraces equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas. There is also a children’s pool. Activities take place in one of the pools, so if you want some peace and quiet, head for one of the other two quieter pools.

Are the staff friendly?

The staff at Club Marthas are a real hit with most people who come here – polite, friendly and always willing to stop and chat. It’s a real delight for me as a reviewer to be able to type that – not all hotels in Cala D Or or anywhere else for that matter attract so many good comments about the staff.

Is there Internet access?

Yes, but only in a kiosk in the public area, not in the rooms. Oh, and in case you were thinking of downloading a copy of “War and Peace”, be aware that one reviewer describes the internet connection speed as “bordering on the criminal”! Oh well, at least they have a connection, unlike some Cala D Or hotels..

What other facilities are on offer?

In April, May and October, to compensate for the slightly cooler weather the hotel opens up the heated indoor swimming pool. The hotel can arrange rental of all manner of little extras such as pushchairs; motorbikes; cars – and fans (presumably of the cooling rather than the groupie kind).

Rather enterprisingly the complex does a nifty line in merchandise so that you can show everyone back home where you have been – baseball caps; tee shirts and even rucksacks are on offer!

“If you fancy a change of scene there are plenty of bars and restaurants just down the road in Cala Egos.”

“I would recommend a top floor room as you get a nice view of the sea.”

Verdict

Club Marthas is a great family-focused complex in the pretty resort of Cala D Or. If you have kids, they will love it here. As for marks out of ten, I knocked something off because they charge for kettle hire, but that’s a minor niggle, and overall I give Club Martha’s a well-deserved 8.5/10.

If, when you think of holidays to Majorca, you think of the wooden donkeys and sombreros of the 1970s, you may like to look again at what this jewel of a holiday destination has to offer.

Majorca holidays can be so many different things to so many people – the traditional beach holiday; the golf holiday; the walking holiday; the clubbing holiday; the activity holiday; the cultural holiday or the sophisticated city break.

But as you will know, many people who come on holiday to Majorca aim to spend sunny days relaxing on the beach, that’s what I’m going to look at here. At least that’s what I wanted to do when I set out to write this, but it’s flippin difficult – the thing is, so many of the beaches in Majorca are, well – so brilliant – that it’s really not fair to shortlist just a few. But, I wanted to at least give you a flavour of what’s on offer, so I’ve picked five beaches that are all very different – please read on and you will see what I mean:

Alcudia Beach – For Family Holidays to Majorca

Holidays to Majorca - Alcudia Beach, by flickr.com user: robs-pics

Five miles of soft white sand and warm sea. That’s Alcudia. The beach is what people come here for, and it’s arguably the best on the island for families because the beach shelves gently into the sea and the waves tend to be small. The swimming area is separated from the boating area, for maximum safety.

Facilities on the beach are excellent – toilets, showers, first aid, wheelchair access – and there are places where you can get something to eat and drink.

Water sports are again geared up to family entertainment, with inflatables, pedalos, and boat rides on offer.

Walk to the east a little and the buildings melt away to leave you in a calm, quiet, relaxing place. The resort town of Alcudia continues the family there – there are no party animals here.

Magaluf – Clubbers’ Chillout Zone

Holidays in Majorca - Magaluf, by wikimedia user: Rafax

Yes, Magaluf and neighbouring Palma Nova together form the number one destination for partying holidays to Majorca. If you’re here for the crack, as they say, you will be pleased to know that when you finally make it to the beach for a bit of chilling, you will not be disappointed because in season, the vibe carries right out of the clubs and onto the longest of all Majorca’s sandy beaches. Music. Drink.. Sun beds… Sleep…. But don’t get burned, OK!

Es Trenc – For Naturist Holidays to Majorca

Holidays in Mallorca - Es Trenc, by flickr.com user: 2007ducky

All of my holidays to Majorca have involved days on this beach – it’s my favourite. The long gently-curving bay with its three-mile stretch of white sand has to be one of the most beautiful in Majorca. Unspoilt and undeveloped, it sits just to the south-east of the town of Campos. Enjoy the lovely drive down through the trees and fields of this traditional agricultural area, and park in the car park or on the side of the road when you get there. The naturist section of the beach is backed by hilly dunes covered with pine trees and bushes, and is very popular, although never crowded because there is plenty of room here. You won’t find much in the way of facilities here – it really is more about getting back to nature.

Cala D’Or – Cosy Coves

This little resort on the south-east coast grew out of a traditional Majorcan fishing village, and it retains its village feel to this day thanks not least to a ban on high-rise buildings. Cala D’Or has no fewer than eight little sandy beaches in sheltered coves, backed by pine trees and very pretty. It’s a good place for families and couples, as the nightlife is low-key and the atmosphere relaxed. Each of the sandy coves here has something slightly different to offer, and they’re all beautiful, but be aware that in high season it does get busy.

Cala Mesquida – For Surfers

Majorca Holiday - Cala Mesquida, by wikimedia user: Oltau

You can almost always rely on some waves at Cala Mesquida – certainly more than anywhere else on the island and it’s home to a surfing competition each year. Normally the swell is between one and two metres, and comes in from the North, but occasionally the wind turns and biggest waves come rolling in from the south, with the occasional tube. It’s a popular spot with local surfers as well as holidaymakers, but bring your own board because you can’t hire one locally.

Well, one short web page cannot hope to do justice to the huge variety and number of beaches along the 230 kilometres of Majorcan coastline, but I hope you now have some ideas.

If you’re considering Majorca for your next holiday, why not take a look at some of the great deals around at the moment – you can simply click the link: Holidays to Majorca.

Club Santa Ponsa Apartments ***

Suntrap Holidays Rating: 9/10

The three-star, all-inclusive Club Santa Ponsa Apartments are actually private apartments with all the amenities of a hotel – an aparthotel – let’s take a look how that works:

Well, for start, the place is a firm favourite among Santa Ponsa hotels if the many customer reviews are anything to go by.

Of 88 reviewers on Trip Advisor, 72% described it as “excellent” or “very good”, with 82% prepared to recommend it to others – these numbers are considerably higher than the average for hotels in Santa Ponsa or anywhere else for that matter. On Holiday Watchdog, it’s a similar story – at the time of writing there are only five reviews on that site – but the average score is 8/10. OK so now we know it’s a popular place – read on to find out why:

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is it?

The aparthotel is located just up a hill at the right-hand end of the main bay of Santa Ponsa as you face the sea, in an elevated position that means it is away from the hustle and bustle of the centre of the resort. So basically it’s not as central as some of the other Santa Ponsa hotels, and it will suit you if you want the amenities of the resort but perhaps without that “in your face” feel!

Santa Ponsa Hotels - Club Santa Ponsa Terrace

It’s near enough that you can walk to the main beach in about 20 minutes, and the shops, bars and restaurants of the resort are within about a 15 minute stroll. Being on top of a small but steep hill means you would probably need a taxi if you have mobility issues (about four euros) – but having said that, the hotel does offer free transport to the beach in a minibus up to eight times a day.

Reception and the main amenities including the restaurant are at the top of the complex, and then the apartments and studios cascade down the hillside on three levels.

At about 31km from the airport, your transfer time will be short, especially by taxi where you will not be calling at other drop-off points.

Is there a bar?

Cutting to the chase already I see.. Yes, there is a bar, near to reception and the restaurant. You can get a drink any time from 10am to midnight, and there is a wide array of beer, wine, spirits, cocktails, sangria and soft drinks on offer – so go easy now!

What about food?

At the Club Santa Ponsa you will find an air-conditioned restaurant with some of the most spectacular views over the bay that you will find anywhere. All-inclusive buffet-style service starts with – now are you ready for this – breakfast from 7:45 till 10am; then snacks from 11am till 1pm such as burgers and chips, in case your kids get an attack of the

Santa Ponsa Hotels - Club Santa Ponsa Dining

munchies; next comes the full-on buffet lunch from 1pm to 3pm; top up with cakes and coffee at 4pm – and the grand finale – dinner from 6pm until 8:30pm! And if you get through that lot, you deserve a medal!

The chefs clearly know their stuff here – the choice and quality of the food comes in for a lot of praise. At breakfast you can go for the full English or save yourself till later and choose the healthier options such as cereals, toast or fresh fruit. At dinner, there is a good variety of meat and fish dishes, rice and pasta dishes, vegetables, salads and an array of desserts.

How do the rooms compare to other Santa Ponsa hotels?

There are 44 studios and 93 apartments here, in blocks of two or three floors, and they are clean and spacious. Each apartment and studio has a kitchenette including a fridge. There is also central heating, a TV, lounge area, phone and a private bathroom and shower. The apartments are bigger, and have a separate bedroom.

All rooms have a terrace or balcony; some of them are huge and many of them have a great view across the tree tops and over the bay because of the hotel’s elevated position.

One minor gripe was that the TVs in the rooms had only one English channel – but come on people, TV? You are on holiday!

What’s outside?

There are two swimming pools with a designated children’s area. One is more lively, where activities are laid on, and

Santa Ponsa Hotels - Club Santa Ponsa Pool

one is quieter. But what makes the gardens, terraces and pools so special here is the absolutely spectacular view over the bay and sandy beach of Santa Ponsa – as you can see from the pic. How many Santa Ponsa hotels can offer you a view like that?

You will also find a children’s playground and tennis courts here.

Further afield, apart from the obvious draw of the sandy beach of Santa Ponsa with all its water sports, in the other direction the main Santa Ponsa golf course is just 900 metres away.

Are the staff friendly?

One reviewer says that the staff here always seem to have a smile on their faces, and the entertainment team also comes in for a good mention or two as do the friendly reception staff.

Is there Internet access?

PCs are available in the public area but there is no WIFI in the rooms here.

What leisure facilities are on offer?

There’s a young animation team here, and they do a great job keeping the kids entertained by the sound of it. The hotel also offers quite an array of activities – table tennis, a gym, archery, air rifle shooting(!), snooker, basketball and miniature golf. Phew, worn me out just thinking about that lot. Now where was that sun bed?

The hotel’s website also mentions an activity that I must confess I have never seen offered at any other Santa Ponsa hotel – ask them at reception, if you dare, for a game of “French Balls”!

Reception can also organise mountain bike hire for you, which is worth it if you fancy a day in the fresh air exploring the pretty lanes that wind up through the wooded hills in countryside that most people who come to Santa Ponsa will never see.

In the evenings there is… now look, forget about being cool for a moment and let your hair down – because at the Club Santa Ponsa there is… bingo! If you really are too cool for skool, as my nephew says, and can’t be doing with the bingo, there is plenty of other entertainment here including some great shows and dancing – sometimes provided by the same team that does the kids’ entertainment in the daytime, and sometimes professional acts.

If you fancy an evening of live entertainment away from the hotel, you can walk for 10 minutes or so to reach an area known as “The Square” where there is free live music and acts in the evenings – including a kids’ disco early on. The open-air square is surrounded by bars that are very popular with families. Just watch out for “Rod Stewart” – that’s all I’m saying..

Verdict

The Club Santa Ponsa has a particularly good all-inclusive deal for the money – great value. It’s up and out of the main resort area, so yes, there are steps, but there are also fantastic views and tranquillity that you will not get in the resort centre. I give it 9/10.

Overlooking the quaint harbour in the pretty resort of Cala Bona, the two-star Hotel Cala Bona is a real hit with customers, but what’s so special about this particular hotel, if anything? Let’s take a closer look..

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is it?

The Hotel Cala Bona occupies probably the prime position of any of the Cala Bona hotels, right next to the harbour and the town’s main square. This means that you can get to several beaches and the town’s bars, shops and restaurants within minutes. A quick tip about those beaches – the nearest one is all pebbles, a whole one minute’s walk away, but if you want sand, I’m afraid you’ll have to hike for a full two minutes to get to the next cove!

Cala Bona Hotels - Front

If you come by car, you will be pleased to know that the hotel has its own car park, and the transfer from the airport takes about 90 minutes by car.

What are the rooms like?

There are 195 double, twin and single rooms here, arranged in five buildings with quirky names like “Nemo” and “La Pergola”. The older main building is the one next to the harbour. This one was built in 1924 – the grandfather of Cala Bona hotels – but it has, you will be pleased to hear, been refurbished since that time without losing some of its old-world feel, such as the lovely wooden shutters on the balcony.

Some people prefer the older block because of its harbour views, others prefer the newer blocks. Note that although you can request a certain building when you book, and it’s true that the staff will do their best to accommodate your wishes, there is no guarantee that your room will be in your chosen block because sometimes, well – they’re just full!

Rooms are of different classes and prices – for example some have air conditioning and some don’t; some have a sea view etc. – so make sure you choose carefully the type of room you want. I think I am right in saying that the single rooms don’t have a balcony or sea view.

ALL rooms have a private bathroom, flat-screen TV, direct dial telephone and a balcony or terrace. The vast majority of people are more than happy with their rooms judging by the many positive reviews.

Who is this hotel best for?

It’s not a “young and lively” hotel and the average age here is higher than in some of the other Cala Bona hotels. This could be explained by the fact that some guests, according to the reviews, have been coming here for 20 years or more – so maybe in about 1960 they would have been right ravers, but by now they’ve calmed down a bit..

Of all Cala Bona hotels, this one has got to be one of the best if you have walking difficulties. It’s so central, and pretty much on the flat. If you have mobility problems just ask for a room on the ground floor, where, as one reviewer puts it, you can often see electric wheelchairs lined up outside, being charged up! In fact, the hotel can arrange electric wheelchair hire if you need this, but please check this at the time of booking to make sure they can get you one – you wouldn’t want to be marooned!

What Facilities does the Cala Bona Hotel have?

There is a swimming pool where you can lounge on a sunbed taking in lovely views of the Majorcan mountains. There’s

Hotel Cala Bona Pool

also a separate children’s area in the pool. In the summer the hotel has an entertainment programme with shows and live music. There are also two TV rooms here, and an on-site hairdresser. Wireless Internet access is also available – you can buy a card from reception.

What about food and drink?

There is a buffet-style restaurant and the full English breakfast here seems to be something rather special if you read the reviews. In the evening there is a good choice of fish and meat dishes – a beef carvery some nights too – and all of the usual accompaniments such as tasty fresh salads. Plenty of fresh fruit too. If you have special dietary requirements, just let reception know and they will do their best to accommodate your needs.

This hotel has something that you won’t find in all Cala Bona hotels – its pavement cafe facing the harbour where you can sip a glass of chilled chardonnay as you watch the boats bobbing in the water.

There are also two bars – a pool bar and a lounge bar, where you can treat yourself to your favourite cocktail or nibble on a bar snack if you get peckish between meals (unlikely at this hotel if you have the English breakfast!)

What are the staff like?

“Regulars” are certainly very much in evidence here and you will quite likely find that most hotel guests here are not on their first visit to the hotel. This has a lot to do with how they are treated when they are here. The porter often comes in for special praise, although one customer describes the barman as “sometimes funny” and I can’t decide if that’s good or bad..

Verdict

For a quiet, friendly hotel in prime position within the lovely Majorcan resort of Cala Bona, the Hotel Cala Bona is difficult to beat. I score it 9/10.

Casablanca Hotel ***

The Casablanca is one of the most popular of all Santa Ponsa hotels according to the main review sites and on this page you can find out why.

On Trip Advisor, out of 31 reviewers, 87% rated it excellent or very good, and an incredible 93% would recommend the hotel. It’s the same story on Holiday Watchdog, where the average score given is 8.5 out of ten, so we had better take a look at the reasons for these high scores:

The hotel was completely renovated in 2008 and people describe it using words like “clean” and “well-run”. It’s a quiet and relaxing place, despite its central location. This makes it good for families, who are made to feel very welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the options for board basis?

You can stay on either a bed and breakfast or half-board basis.

Where is it?

The hotel is about as convenient as you could want, located just behind the main sandy beach of Santa Ponsa – about 200 metres away from the sand. It’s in an elevated position so the sea views are excellent. The resort centre is only 500 metres away and the nearest bar just a 150 metre stagger! However, although it’s central, the hotel is not too close to the night-life, so it’s not rowdy here.

Santa Ponsa hotels - Casablanca

Note that the hotel may not be suitable for those with walking difficulties, because there are some steps to negotiate – six up to the entrance, and about 40 to the pool – and the hotel is on a steep slope.

Like all hotels in Santa Ponsa, the Casablanca is within easy reach of Palma airport which is 31 kilometres away.

What’s the food like?

The food here is said to be plentiful and with a fair amount of variety considering this is a three-star Santa Ponsa hotel rather than a more expensive four-star. Hot and cold dishes are served at breakfast from 8am until 9:45am. In the evening you can expect a good choice of well-prepared food on offer between 7pm and 9pm, including fish, meat and pasta dishes. One reviewer describes the salad displays as the best they had ever seen or tasted!

Evening meals and breakfast is served in the immaculate main buffet restaurant, with the lounge bar and pool bar serving very good snacks during the day. There is also a weekly “gala dinner”.

One complaint was that tables in the restaurant seat four people, so if there are two of you, a table will be allocated to you at the start of your stay and you are expected to share it with another two people. This could be interesting or an annoyance, depending on how you hit it off with the other couple!

How do the rooms compare to other Santa Ponsa hotels?

The Casablanca Hotel has 66 twin rooms and 21 single rooms in its main building of five floors, and in addition there

Santa Ponsa Hotels Casablanca Dining

are 23 apartments of one or two bedrooms in a separate building. The hotel was refurbished in 2008.

All of the rooms have air conditioning or heating depending on the season, and are equipped with a private bathroom with shower; satellite TV; a telephone, and a safe (for a small charge). There is no hair-dryer as standard as this is a three-star hotel, so if you want one you will need to bring one or hire one. Most rooms have a balcony or terrace, but some of the singles don’t, so check this at the time of booking. Also, note that although most rooms have a sea view, some don’t so if this is important to you, it might be worth requesting it when you book. If you go for one of the apartments, these have a kitchen/lounge as well as the bedrooms.

The thing that so many reviewers keep mentioning about the Casablanca is the cleanliness of the rooms. The management clearly take this very seriously and I wish this were true at all Santa Ponsa hotels. No worries at all here when it comes to cleanliness. Fresh towels every day too.

What’s outside?

There is a large pool, larger than you will find in many Santa Ponsa hotels, and plenty of sunbeds and parasols to choose from on the extensive terraces and gardens. There is also a dedicated children’s section in the pool.

Do they have Internet access?

I can find no evidence of internet facilities at the this hotel. Please contact Suntrap Holidays if you know different..

Are the staff friendly?

Reviewers tend to describe the staff using words like “friendly” and “polite”, and there are tales of the chef going out of his way to accommodate requests from those who have special dietary needs or preferences.

What leisure facilities are on offer?

You can enjoy live entertainment at this hotel twice a week, which is not as often as at some of the larger Santa Ponsa hotels, but you have to bear in mind that this is three star and you are getting very good value here. Watch out for what one customer described as the “Margarita Pracatan-style sing-alongs”!! Table tennis and video games are also on offer.

“the toddlers’ pool tends to be in the shade during the afternoons, so you can let them play there without getting burned, while you relax with a drink from the pool bar!”

“there’s a Spar supermarket two minutes away if you want some cheap refreshments for the room”

Verdict

The Casablanca is a friendly, clean, honest-to-goodness three-star Santa Ponsa hotel. You get very full value here – it’s certainly one of the best in its class in my opinion. If you want the few extras that a four-star might have, such as a kids’ club, you might like to look at the Punta del Mar instead – but of course you will be spending a little more on your accommodation there.

If you want to stay in a relaxing, quiet hotel just a stone’s throw from the lovely sandy beach, at a great price, the Casablanca could be just the hotel for you. I rate it 8.5/10.
